EU’s environmental ministers made the first tiny step towards an agreement about less CO2 pollution

October 27th, 2009

Last week the European Union ministers of environment met in Brussels, Belgium where they reached an agreement about what to propose at the United Nation’s Climate Meeting COP15 in Copenhagen. However, they didn’t reach a full agreement, but only covered a corner of the total pollution problem caused by the massive emission of greenhouse gasses.
The European Union’s proposal in December 2009 will be that the CO2 emissions from transportation by shipping and aviation have to be reduced by the year 2020. The greenhouse gasses caused by ships have to be reduced 20% and by airplanes 10%, both reductions are based upon the year 2005 levels.
Of course it is good that the European governments have agreed about a plan, but there is a long way of negotiation with other countries about the total CO2 emissions caused by transportation, inclusive cars.
And even more important, it is necessary that the agreements are more than hopes and intentional reductions. The Copenhagen meeting is only successful if the reductions are specified for each country all over the World, and if it is agreed which penalty there will be implemented if the goals are not reached.
If the global pollution continues then the disasters caused by the climate changes will reach a level we cannot even imagine today.
